Mastering the craft: Our pottery techniques

At Alaska Panhandle Pottery, we believe that understanding the process behind each piece deepens its appreciation. Discover the intricate techniques that shape our unique creations and learn what makes our pottery truly special.

Our palette of pottery techniques

We incorporate a rich variety of pottery techniques into our designs, each contributing to the distinct character of our work. From the foundational art of throwing and trimming to the artistic applications of waxing, glazing, slip trailing, chattering, faceting, sgraffito, and decals, every method is chosen to enhance the beauty and integrity of our pottery.

Artistry in every detail

What makes our pottery unique and beautiful are the special ways we use these techniques. They allow us to add distinct shapes, engaging textures, vibrant colors, and captivating interest to each piece. Every stroke and application is a deliberate choice, ensuring that the final product is not just functional but also a piece of art that tells a story.

Our signature: The art of slip trailing

One technique that has been used widely in our work would be slip trailing. This method, learned at a workshop in Sitka in the early '80s, has become an often-used element that frequently identifies my pottery. It is a testament to precision and artistic flair, allowing us to create intricate raised designs that add a tactile and visual depth to pieces.
