The journey begins with Jim Bowman
Jim Bowman's artistic journey began in Blackfoot, Idaho, leading him to an architecture degree from the University of Idaho. While pursuing humanities credits, a pottery class sparked a lifelong passion for clay. This unexpected discovery laid the foundation for Alaska Panhandle Pottery, where architectural precision now meets the fluid artistry of pottery. Jim's dedication transforms simple clay into functional art, each piece reflecting a unique blend of discipline and creativity.
Crafting with Alaskan spirit
At Alaska Panhandle Pottery, Jim's work primarily focuses on functional, wheel-thrown pieces. With clay sourced from Seattle in thousand-pound quantities, each creation is a testament to resilience and tradition. Production may pause during fishing season, but the artistry resumes with renewed vigor. Jim's signature slip-trailed accents, inspired by a workshop in Sitka, add a distinctive touch to every pot. Since retiring in 2019, he has introduced innovative shapes like "canteens" and "holey pots," alongside techniques such as chattering and fluting, allowing for the creation of much larger, more expressive pieces. This continuous evolution ensures that each item is not just pottery but a unique work of art.

Living in Juneau, Alaska, since 1980 has profoundly shaped the work at Alaska Panhandle Pottery. This spectacularly beautiful place, with its majestic mountains, pristine ocean, abundant wildlife, and unique community, serves as an endless source of inspiration. The natural grandeur of God's creation in Juneau is not just a backdrop but an integral part of the pottery's spirit, infusing each piece with the serene and rugged beauty of the Alaskan wilderness.
